There are a few things to consider when deciding whether to make a post private or public.
If you're concerned about privacy and don't want everyone to see that you posted, then making it private is the best option. This way, only people you've already matched with (based on limited information and dependent on matching tags/locations) will know about your post and can message you.
Private posts are based on mutual interest, so you won't be notified or messaged unless someone posted trying to find you and it's a match. And since you control how you want to match with others, it's up to you and what you write, show, and let the other person know about you!
The advantage of public posts, however is that anyone can see and reply to you.
